Let me preface this by stating that my purpose is not to blow smoke up Mr. Limbaugh’s ass; merely to point out a few facts about the mind behind the Excellent in Broadcasting microphone as it relates to the crisis in which we find ourselves.
Love him or loath him (these are generally the two choices) Rush Limbaugh has been a staple of U.S. political commentary for close to 20 years.
As such he has seen politicians, presidents and policies come and go. He is a veteran of the mechanisms of Washington thinking. He is respected by those who love and despise him. This is due to his uncanny ability to provide fluent intelligent discourse, daily – live on the air – about political issues and current affairs. If anyone knows Washington, Limbaugh does. He is, if you like, the J. Edgar Hoover of politics.
Rush’s opinions are a smidge right of center. In fact given a Nazi party uniform some might say he’d fit right in. Therein lies the problem for some who see him as a mouthpiece or shill for the Republican party. This is a mistaken viewpoint. His focus is conservatism and conservative values. Limbaugh is consistent in his conservative drum-beat even at the expense of the Republican Party members whom he gently kicks the s**t out of from time to time to keep them on track.
He has a unique and valuable license to criticize our leaders that is otherwise lost in the fogs of political correctness in this country. There are few like him; few that are heard like him. He has no qualms in criticizing President to Intern in DC. Limbaugh is a guardian of public opinion; a rudder for all things conservative and a staunch believer in most things American.
El-Rushbo, as he known to his legions of fans, is not a person to be trifled with. You do so at your peril. The saying ‘before you kick the tiger in the nuts you’d better know where his teeth are,' applies amply here.
He has a large militant audience numbering in the teens of millions, with a broad demographic who, given prompting, can turn on a Rush critic like a pack of rabid dogs with irritated hemorrhoids. This is a lesson our good president Obama and the leader of the Republican Party, Michael Steele, found out recently. Steele’s calling Limbaugh an “entertainer” is akin to calling Elvis a “vocalist”; both statements are true but both are wide of the mark. Steele’s best ally at present; the best ally of the Republican Party is Mr. Limbaugh, something they should not forget. Like the mind; it’s a terrible thing to waste.
Enough about Rush the Conservative, let’s talk about Rush the Resource.
With his active mind – some would say brilliant and I can’t disagree – Limbaugh is a vast repository of knowledge, common sense and logic. In addition to politics, he has seen economic cycles come and go. His accumulated knowledge is a national resource that a smart politician should put to good use.
If I were the President I would have had a quiet dinner with Rush accompanied by Screaming Eagle Cabernet followed by a couple of Montecristos. I’d peer through the smoke and say “look Rush, I’m in deep s**t, in uncharted economic territory. I need to steer this behemoth we call America back to a time of stable economics and world leadership. I would appreciate your help and support." How hard was that?
An integral part of the answer lies in the dual kernel of what has to be done – solid economic strategy combined with re-harnessing the intangible – U.S. consumer confidence. Limbaugh provides the answer to the first part of this question recently by suggesting tax cuts to zero for capital gains and a drop in corporate taxes to get cash flowing again. And he’s right. He can see the wood for the trees.
The second part, getting people to believe in it, is the product of good public relations and politics. And credibility. Listening to politicians speak is like listening to virgins lined up outside a whorehouse; despite their bravado neither is quite sure what is going to happen next.
Limbaugh could deliver both the answer and the consumer leadership through his popular mouthpiece. And it will cost considerably less than the trillions being poured into the crap-spreader at present.
Mr. Limbaugh as advisor? Perhaps not as crazy as it sounds. As an Oval Office Presidential advisor President Obama would have at his fingertips a unique combination; the pulse of the right wing in one hand and of the left in the other. Granted you are getting a sizable ego as part of the package but that’s to be expected. Like Bono, in Rattle and Hum, Rush could be followed about with a spot-lamp trained on his shiny super intelligent head.
Limbaugh is the best self promoter in the business and one of the most recognizable. He could – at not much of a stretch – be the ‘uniter’ that our past president spoke of - motivating, through threat of on-air ridicule, both parties together for the good of the country. It would be a travesty for our President to let this opportunity go untapped.
What would motivate Rush to co-operate? Stroking the aforementioned ego would be a key component; money and power would not. He has both of those in full measure.
Maybe all we have to do is ask.
Rush?
