Imagine for a moment that you’re a corporate branch manager. There’s a knock on the door of your office, a reporter enters. The reporter questions you about the rape of your clients children by some of your employees. (I know it’s crazy, but stick with me.) Turns out, you knew about this already but had simply transferred the accused rascals to another branch.
What would you do?
Respond with contempt for the accusers or the reporter? Claim that it happened too long ago (inferring that it doesn't matter)? Say you don’t remember? Tell them that that you took care of the matter internally (according to the corporate employee manual that you haven’t read or referred to for 50 years).
Afterwards when accounting calls to say that you’re short of cash would ask your clients to pitch in? The same clients whose children your employees raped? Of course the entire concept is silly; daft in fact. It is however exactly what the Catholic Church is doing. And it’s not acceptable.
We hear these murky responses as Bishops attempt to deal with the consequences of their employing and hiding pedophile priests. They try to blow it off, inferring that it’s not as big a deal as we think it is. 'Church business, cannon law, blah, blah'…bollocks.
Let me
state their actions, as managers, as Bishops, in plain English. These bishops,
1. lied
2. obstructed justice
3. were accessories to crimes
4. knowingly allowed criminals to rape their parishioners children (!)
5. continue to allow them to rape the children of other parishioners when caught
(!!)
6. (some) allegedly participated in the rape of children themselves
7. attempted to duck what they were clearly responsible for by blaming time,
others, anyone or anything but themselves.
As a response you don’t need me to tell you the plain, logical answer to these actions. We don’t politely ask these managers, these bishops, for their resignation on company letterhead. We fire them, with prejudice.
In fact we have security toss them onto the street followed by the contents of their desk. We even arrange to have the police waiting for them to face criminal charges. Anything less makes us as culpable as they.
I think those of us with a religious bent are missing something here. These men claim to be men of G-d. They’re not. G-d does not employ rapists, liars and criminals. He may forgive them, but that’s not our concern. These Bishops are not what they claim to be, they are simply men dressed up to appear so.
To coin a popular phrase; what would Jesus do? What would Jesus have done had he found out that his apostles had lied to cover up the rape of his little children by his followers? Jesus had a soft spot for children so I’ll let him tell you himself through the gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 18:2-6: And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.”
