Super Bowl Sponsors 100% aware that
Pete Townshend is a known sex offender.
Now Miami residents are too.
This weekend Miami residents in the neighborhoods that surround Land Shark stadium will receive a postcard. No ordinary postcard, this one carries a warning. A warning about an upcoming visit by a know registered sex offender, Pete Townshend of the British Band, the WHO.
Protect Our Children, the Florida based sex offender watchdogs, issued the postcard advisory – in English and Spanish – to make Miami parents aware of Townshend’s imminent arrival for the Super Bowl half time show. Kevin Gillick, the groups President has been fighting the National Football League over the hiring of former sex offender Townshend for some months. This latest event – the mailing of the warnings – is one of the legal tools he has available when countering the arrival of sex offenders. Protect Our Children publishes regular sex offender notifications in Florida including a newspaper and postcard alerts. See the advisory at the bottom of the page.
The advisory is certain to make already fidgety sponsors nervous as they have been standing steadfastly behind the NFL’s decision to keep Townshend in the line up. They have taken this position despite a huge public backlash by Americans indignant that the NFL has hired a known sex offender to entertain them and their children at the upcoming Super Bowl.
In another development Child AbuseWatch has written another letter to Roger Goodell at the NFL and the Super Bown sponsors in an effort to have them rethink their hiring of Townshend.
“What it comes down to is that you wouldn’t hire a known sex offender to mow your lawn; why then do you support hiring one for the Super Bowl?" Daly wrote to Sponsors including VISA, SouthWest Airlines and Merck. Sponsors were provided the Townshend case disclosure documents by Child AbuseWatch in a previous letter on January 7th, listing the facts of the Townshend case and making it amply clear that not only are the sponsors hiring a former sex offender, they are 100% aware of the fact.
According to the NFL website, sponsors include Burger King, Campbell’s, Canon USA, Coors Brewing, Dairy Management Inc., FedEx, Frito-Lay, Gatorade, General Motors, IBM, Masterfoods, MBNA, Motorola, News America, PepsiCo: Diet Pepsi, PepsiCo: Tropicana, Procter & Gamble (Prilosec), Schering-Plough (Levitra), Southwest Airlines, Sprint, Visa.
Townshend was caught viewing and paying for child pornography by the British police in 2003. Despite not finding any child rape images on his computers, he pleaded guilty to viewing and paying for viewing of child pornography. For this guilty plea to paying for child porn online, termed in the UK as ‘incitement to distribute child pornography images,’ Townshend was registered as a sex offender on the Violent and Sex Offender Registry (ViSOR) in the UK for five years from 2003 to 2008. As part of his registration he had to give DNA and fingerprints to the police and he had to check in regularly with them whenever he wanted to travel.
Regarding the advisory, “we do this whenever a sex offender enters an area,’ Gillick explained. “People have a right to know when a sex offender is going to be in their neighborhood; celebrity or not.’ Protect Our Children and Child AbuseWatch have notified the INS, ICE, FDLE and a number of other agencies to protest Townshend’s ability to travel into the U.S. with his sex offender status – a criminal offence. The agencies have not responded, nor will they, given privacy concerns. However there is a chance that Townshend may be turned away and denied entry to the US or picked up in Florida and required to register as a sex offender.
In the U.S. there are no ‘former’ sex offenders. Once registered, it’s a lifetime identity.
